The United Nations special envoy to Burma, Ibrahim Gambari, was this morning making a last-ditch attempt to meet with Myanmar’s top military chief, after spending the weekend in the troubled nation without securing a meeting. Mr Gambari had flown to the junta’s new capital of Naypyidaw after a week of mass protests and violence to end decades of military rule, with the hope of holding talks with Burma’s reclusive leader, General Than Shwe, and attempting to persuade him to accept the demands of the Burmese people for democracy.
